About Me
Dr. Caroline Bearss, ND is a Naturopathic Doctor with over 25 years of clinical experience and a focused practice in mental health, serving clients throughout Ontario and British Columbia. In addition to being a naturopathic doctor, she has post-graduate training in environmental medicine, building biology, education, and psychology. Among a select group of Canadian naturopathic doctors with advanced certification in functional medicine in mental health, she brings a depth of insight and patient-centred care to the assessment of complex mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, cognitive decline, sleep, hormone and eating dysregulation, personality disorders, bipolar, suicidal ideation, OCD, addiction, PTSD/CPTSD, and stress-related conditions. Known for her thorough approach, Dr. Bearss ND integrates comprehensive diagnostics to understand the often-overlooked drivers that can influence mental and cognitive well-being. Factors such as chronic infections, environmental toxicants, nutrient deficiencies, digestive dysfunction, hormone dysregulation, inflammation, HPA axis imbalances, and genetics have been proven to affect the brain, gut, endocrine and nervous system. Her work is guided by intellectual curiosity and scientific commitment. By asking not only what symptoms are present, but why they occur, Dr. Bearss ND brings a uniquely investigative perspective to the understanding and treatment of mental health.

My story
My path into naturopathic mental healthcare has been shaped by both personal experience and a lifelong interest in understanding the connections between mind, body, and environment. Growing up, I witnessed the impact of mental illness firsthand, as my father lived with undiagnosed bipolar disorder for decades. This experience fostered a deep respect for the complexity of mental illness and an awareness of the limitations of relying solely on a diagnosis, pharmaceutical medication, and talk therapy.
A psychiatrist colleague once remarked that psychiatry is unique among medical specialties in that diagnoses are often made without any laboratory testing. This observation sparked my interest in exploring the biological factors that contribute to mental health conditions and motivated me to look beyond symptom management toward understanding the underlying drivers of psychopathology. At the time, a growing body of scientific research was already demonstrating the important roles that nutritional, biochemistry, genetics, and metabolic states play in mental health.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, I observed a profound shift in the mental well-being of both my patients and in the global community. Anxiety, depression, burnout, sleep disruption, addiction, mood dysregulation, and emotional overwhelm became increasingly common. In response, I pursued advanced training through a fellowship certification program with functional psychiatrist Dr. James Greenblatt, MD, founder of Psychiatry Redefined. Through this work, I developed a practice focused on functional mental health, which encompasses advanced diagnostic testing and natural treatment geared to correct underlying reasons for symptoms. I gained expertise in targeted assessments and personalized treatment approaches that can create meaningful and lasting change.
Alongside clinical practice, I have a master’s degree in education and a passion for empowering clients and health professionals with essentials to transform mental healthcare. To support this mission, I develop and teach webinars, courses, and certification programs for both the public and health providers, including nutritionists, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychotherapists, and psychologists.
My goal is to bridge the gap between the scientific community and practical healthcare by sharing how the body functions and what it needs to support a healthy body, brain, and mind. I also equip healthcare professionals with the tools to provide biological mental health education and guidance for their clients, fostering a more integrative, evidence-informed approach to care within both clinical and community settings.
Raising my daughter in Muskoka, Ontario, has deepened my appreciation for connection—to land, community, and purpose. Today, my work is focused on helping people better understand the underlying factors contributing to their symptoms, reconnect with their health story, and move forward with greater clarity, resilience, and effective support.
